Organic matrices in metazoan calcium carbonate skeletons: composition, functions, evolution.
2016
9 pages; International audience; Calcium carbonate skeletal tissues in metazoans comprise a small quantity of occluded organic macromolecules, mostly proteins and polysaccharides that constitute the skeletal matrix. Because its functions in modulating the biomineralization process are well known, the skeletal matrix has been extensively studied, successively via classical biochemical approaches, via molecular biology and, in recent years, via transcriptomics and proteomics. The optimistic view that the deposition of calcium carbonate minerals requires a limited number of macromolecules has been challenged, in the last decade, by high-throughput approaches. Such approaches have made possible…
An extended version of the theory of planned behavour: Prediction of intentions to quit smoking using past behaviour as moderator
2010
It was hypothesised that: (i) intentions to quit smoking were predictable from group identity, self-identity, moral norms and past quit attempts, beyond the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), and (ii) that past experiences with the behaviour (quit attempts) would increase the predictive utility of the extended TPB model on intentions. The data was collected among 357 daily smoking students (M = 24 years). The TPB components accounted for 12.3% of the variance in quitting intentions, while the extension variables added 16.5% to the explained variance in intentions beyond the impact of the TPB. Past behaviour had the strongest impact on intentions (α = 0.30), followed by mor…
The PANDA Barrel DIRC detector
2014
Abstract The PANDA experiment at the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR) at GSI, Darmstadt, will study fundamental questions of hadron physics and QCD using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. Efficient Particle Identification for a wide momentum range and the full solid angle is required for reconstructing the various physics channels of the PANDA program. Hadronic Particle Identification in the barrel region of the detector will be provided by a DIRC counter. The design is based on the successful BABAR DIRC with important improvements, such as focusing optics and fast photon timing. Several of these improvements, includin…
Measurement of theB0→K2*(1430)0γandB+→K2*(1430)+γbranching fractions
2004
We have investigated the exclusive, radiative B meson decays to K2*(1430) in 89* 10^6 BBbar events with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II storage ring. We measure the branching fractions BR(B0 -> K2*(1430)0 gamma) = (1.22 +-0.25 +-0.10)*10^(-5) and BR(B+ -> K2*(1430)+ gamma) = (1.45 +-0.40 +-0.15) * 10^(-5), where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. In addition, we measure the CP-violating asymmetry ACP(B0 -> K2*(1430)0 gamma) = -0.08 +- 0.15 +- 0.01.
Least squares and genetic algorithms for parameter identification of induction motors
2001
Abstract This paper deals with off-line parameter identification of induction motors by means of least square (LS) techniques and genetic algorithms (GA), using stator voltages, stator currents and velocity as input–output data. For analytical identification by LS algorithms, filtering of experimental data is performed by means of anticausal filters. Two models useful for identification are derived in which the products of acceleration and rotor fluxes, usually neglected, are taken into account. The GA-based identification method consists of the determination of the best parameters which match input–output behaviour of the motor. Both methods are investigated and compared by means of experi…
TPP2 mutation associated with sterile brain inflammation mimicking MS
2018
ObjectiveTo ascertain the genetic cause of a consanguineous family from Syria suffering from a sterile brain inflammation mimicking a mild nonprogressive form of MS.MethodsWe used homozygosity mapping and next-generation sequencing to detect the disease-causing gene in the affected siblings. In addition, we performed RNA and protein expression studies, enzymatic activity assays, immunohistochemistry, and targeted sequencing of further MS cases from Austria, Germany, Canada and Jordan.ResultsIn this study, we describe the identification of a homozygous missense mutation (c.82T>G, p.Cys28Gly) in the tripeptidyl peptidase II (TPP2) gene in all 3 affected siblings of the family. Sequencing o…
Identification of plant cells in black pigments of prehistoric Spanish Levantine rock art by means of a multi-analytical approach. A new method for s…
2017
We present a new multi-analytical approach to the characterization of black pigments in Spanish Levantine rock art. This new protocol seeks to identify the raw materials that were used, as well as reconstruct the different technical gestures and decision-making processes involved in the obtaining of these black pigments. For the first of these goals, the pictorial mat- ter of the black figurative motifs documented at the Les Dogues rock art shelter (Ares del Maestre, Castello ́ n, Spain) was characterized through the combination of physicochemical and archeobotanical analyses. During the first stage of our research protocol, in situ and non- destructive analyses were carried out by means of…

Rapid Identification by MALDITOF of Neisseria elongata Subspecies nitroreducens in an Endocarditis Case
2015
Abstract Background: Neisseria elongata subspecies nitroreducens is considered to be an important pathogen responsible for infective endocarditis, even if it is infrequently reported. We report the first case of endocarditis in Italy due to N. elongata subsp. nitroreducens. Case presentation: The infection occurs in a 40-year-old male affected by Marfan syndrome with a prosthetic aortic valve. The patient had had a fever for a week which had been resistant to antibiotic therapy. Conclusion: we propose a correct and rapid identification of Neisseria elongata subspecies nitroreducens by mass spectrometry directly from the positive blood culture. The rapidly identification obtained by MALDI-TO…
Molecular barcoding for central-eastern European Crioceris leaf-beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)
2011
Abstract Among Crioceris leaf-beetles, the two most widespread species (Crioceris asparagi and C. duodecimpunctata) are serious invasive plant pests, while another two (C. quatuordecimpunctata and C. quinquepunctata) are rare species restricted to steppe-like habitats in Eurasia. The aim of the research was to check the genetic distinctiveness of these four species and develop barcodes for their molecular identification using the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene and two nuclear markers: Elongation Factor 1-α (EF1-α) and Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS1). The identification of each species was possible and reliable with the use of COI and ITS1 markers. EF1-α was omitted in an…
